Don’t Let Google Be Your Doctor: The Dangers of Self-Diagnosing

Sick man looking up his illness online

When you don’t feel well or start experiencing symptoms, where’s the first place you turn? For many people, it’s Google. With a few words and a quick click, you suddenly have pages and pages to read through. The sheer volume of information can be overwhelming – and the self-diagnosis that comes courtesy of Google is often wrong.

So, say hello to vybe! The licensed medical professionals at our walk-in urgent care centers will carefully evaluate your injury or illness and provide you with a clinical diagnosis and treatment plan – all in one easy, convenient visit.

Find out why clinical diagnosis is so valuable, self-diagnosis can be dangerous, and how vybe makes your visit as productive as possible.

Getting a clinical diagnosis at vybe

At vybe, we encourage all patients to ask questions, voice their concerns, and have an open dialogue with us. We’re partners in your healthcare and want you to have the best possible visit.

Your vybe clinician will follow several steps during your illness or injury evaluation to give you the most precise health diagnosis and treatment plan, including:

  • Reviewing your health history
  • Assessing your symptoms and the severity of your condition
  • Running tests or screenings

Not everything on the internet is accurate or interpreted correctly, so visiting a medical professional for a clinical diagnosis is always best. vybe is UCA accredited, which means we deliver the highest level of distinction in patient care through safety, quality, and scope of services. (Take that, Google!)

When a self-diagnosis goes wrong

Sometimes, patients are absolutely certain they know what’s wrong. After all, no one knows your body better than you – or at least that’s how the saying goes.

You deserve the best possible healthcare experience, and we hold ourselves accountable for making it a positive one every time. You may feel dismissed, disappointed, or frustrated if your self-diagnosis turns out to be incorrect. Here are some tips that can help:

  • Try to keep an open mind
  • Don’t fixate on a certain outcome
  • Bring a printout of the health information you read so you and the doctor can review it together

Finally, remember that we see hundreds of patients at vybe urgent care clinics every day. A trained clinician can quickly arrive at a correct health diagnosis – even one you spent hours searching about online. Your satisfaction matters to us, so we do everything we can to make your visit informative and productive (more on that later).

The most common self-diagnosis outcomes

When patients walk-in or schedule an appointment at a vybe center for an illness or injury evaluation, it’s common to hear these requests:

“I need an antibiotic

There are excellent reasons to avoid giving antibiotics to patients who don’t need them. In fact, many wonder if antibiotics are a cure or a curse.

Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to our health, as bacteria adapt to resist the medications, we use to fight them. Today’s over prescription of antibiotics continues to speed up this process. By 2050, an estimated 10 million people will die each year from antibiotic-resistant infections unless we can reverse the trend.

“I need a prescription drug”

Many vybe patients use prescription drugs safely and successfully to manage chronic conditions. Some prescription drugs save lives. However, taking prescription drugs unnecessarily or excessively is dangerous and can lead to abuse.

Prescription drugs that are abused most often include opioid painkillers, anti-anxiety medications, sedatives, and stimulants. Your vybe urgent care center can prescribe certain types of medication, but only if your clinical diagnosis warrants it.

“I need an x-ray”

During an injury evaluation, we may find that a suspected fracture is just a sprain or strain.

Your vybe clinician will confirm that you need an x-ray before proceeding. vybe offers x-ray services at all locations – however, we don’t want patients exposed to radiation for no reason.

Creating a productive visit

Patient satisfaction matters to us, and so does giving you the most accurate health diagnosis possible. You can help make your visit more productive by:

  • Telling the doctor about your symptoms – Don’t focus on what you think is going on with you or what you have.
  • Expressing your concerns openly and honestly – Every vybe patient should feel comfortable enough to have open communication with their doctor.
  • Asking questions – We want every patient to be informed. Feel free to ask the doctor to explain the reasoning for their actions and suggestions.

Don’t self-diagnose – visit vybe instead

Your health is far too valuable to leave it in the hands of Google or any other self-diagnosis tools. Everyone deserves great health care, and that starts with a proper health diagnosis.

We accept walk-ins for all urgent care services, including illness and injury evaluations. So, skip the Google search and schedule an appointment at your local vybe urgent care
