What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition caused by an overactive immune system causing inflammation in the lungs and narrowing airway passages. As a result, asthma makes breathing difficult and leads to coughing wheezing, or shortness of breath.

Asthma Symptoms

Recognizing the symptoms of asthma is key to proactive care. Common signs include:

  • Persistent coughing (especially at night or after physical activity)
  • Wheezing (a whistling sound during breathing)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness

Symptoms can range from mild to severe, depending on how strongly the airways react to what triggered your asthma. When asthma symptoms suddenly worsen, it is referred to as an asthma attack.

What Are Asthma Triggers?

If you have asthma, an asthma attack can occur when you’re exposed to a “trigger.” Common asthma triggers include:

  • Air pollution
  • Allergies to dust, pests, pets, mold, pollen, etc (Allergic Asthma)
  • Certain medications
  • Cold, dry air
  • Physical exercise
  • Respiratory infections like a cold, the flu, or sinus infection
  • Strong emotions (anger, fear, laughter, etc.)
  • Tobacco smoke

Asthma triggers aren’t the same for everyone. Some may react to only a few while others react to many.
