The vybe Guide to Staying Healthy this School Year

It’s almost that time of year again. That’s right – school is back in about a month. And that means it’s time to start trading in those kites and skateboards for pencils and notebooks.

In addition to preparing your eager student with school supplies, there are likely a few other boxes you’ll need to check before Philly schools open, to ensure they’re approaching their education with a healthy body and healthy mind. Whether it be preventative, illness, injury, check-ups, and beyond, vybe urgent care is here to help.

Seasonal Illnesses

School can be a playground for infectious bacteria. The common cold is still the number one reason children miss school. And as we get further into the school year, the flu becomes a bigger concern, as flu season starts in October and peaks in December. The flu can take a child out of school for about 5-7 days, and kids with the flu can still infect others a full week after that.

So what can you do? Well, when you come into vybe, your check up can include any of the following:

  • Flu shots for anyone over the age of 4
  • Prescriptions for antibiotics, if needed
  • Testing to make sure that cold your student has is just a cold

Allergies

Pollen is everywhere, so it’s hard for kids with allergies to avoid it. Your kids may end up sneezing and coughing their way through the school year, which can end up taking a toll on their focus and work. It’s difficult for your kids with allergies to avoid suffering from these symptoms, so you may be wondering what you could do to help your student cope.

Well, the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology may first recommend to roll up your windows when driving them to and from school. If that doesn’t work, you can always visit one of our four urgent care centers where we can recommend the best treatment and medications to help reduce sneezing and other allergy induced symptoms.

Physicals

Sports can play an important role for any growing child – impacting their health, social aptitude, and overall enjoyment of the school year. But before they can gear up and start playing for any team from the Central Lancers to the Temple Owls, they’re going to need a physical.

An urgent care visit is an easy way to clear all your child’s physicals in a friendly environment, so you can rest assured that your child’s health is in good order. With our four Philly locations and board-certified physicians just a quick trip away, you won’t have to worry about the long wait or appointment required to visit a physician’s office.

Miscellaneous Injuries

Injuries in school are more common than you might think. According to a Princeton study, over 10 million school days are lost to injury per year, and the risk for injury at school peaks at grades 6-8. Injuries take place due to a variety of factors – including simple horseplay on the playground. If your child gets hurt, urgent care can treat any injury that is not considered life threatening. This includes scrapes, burns, breaks, or concussions. See a full list of what we can cover here.

As long as you are prepared, you can worry less about when your child goes back to school. Know that your friendly neighborhood urgent care center is always here to help when needed. Whether that means a check-up, a flu-shot, a physical or anything else, we’ll work our hardest to ensure you a quick, easy, and affordable visit at any of our locations – no appointment necessary!
